The cattle slaughter in Brazil in the first quarter of 2023 was of 7.31 million heads, 4.7% increase compared to the first quarter of 2022 (6.98 million heads).

In 2023, cattle slaughter accumulated a second consecutive year of increase in the 1st quarter (Figure). It is also worth noting that in the first 3 months of 2021 slaughter totaled 6.60 million head, the lowest value for the period over 10 years.

The average slaughter of cattle in the 1st quarter, in 10 years, from 2014 to 2023, was of 7.48 million heads. This shows that despite the increase, slaughter continues to be below average over the last decade. In this period, cattle slaughter in the first three months of the year reached its maximum in 2014 (8.37 million heads) and its minimum in 2021 (6.60 million heads).

It is important to remember that in 2021 the price of the calf reached a historical record level, with a consequent reduction in the slaughter of cows in that year. However, with the fall in the price of the calf, the supply of cows for slaughter has increased since 2022, contributing to a greater supply of animals for slaughter in 2023 and equally pressuring the price of the animal ready for slaughter.

Farmnews updates the nominal average price data for brazilian beef cattle  (live animal ready for slaugther) from 2020 to April 2023.
